Description

Miyonga empowers smallholder farmers in reducing post-harvest waste and losses while providing wholesome products that meet international standards.”
Small rural farmers in Kenya grow high-value tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapples but much of their fruit never reaches the market. Meanwhile, worldwide demand for dried tropical fruit exceeds the supply and is growing. Miyonga connects these small scale producers to large and high growth markets in Europe by transforming fruit that is currently wasted at the farm into a new source of recurring income for these rural farmers.
AGRICULTURAL FOOD WASTE:
In Kenya and east Africa, 40% of a fruit crop like mangoes or pineapples is typically left at the rural farm gate to rot primarily rejected for cosmetic reasons even though the fruit is still very delicious.”
POVERTY & UNAFFORDABLE EDUCATION:
“To escape intergenerational poverty, women—who do most of the farming in rural Kenya—need more income opportunities to provide for their families. Research shows women reinvest 80% of their income into their families—especially to pay for their children’s education so they can have a better future.”
“Miyonga’s business addresses these social issues, supporting the UN’s SDGs of poverty reduction, decent work opportunities, better education and reductions in equality.”
