Katha
Katha is a unique model that seamlessly connects grassroots work in education, urban resurgence and story.
Description
Katha is an award-winning nonprofit which was started in 1988 by Geeta Dharmarajan to enhance the joy of reading and the love of books. It was formally registered under the Registrar of Societies on September 8, 1989. Katha is a pioneer in the fields of translation, publishing and education. In its 28 years of focussed work with children from under-served communities mainly, Katha has brought change through its books, schools, reading campaigns and community interactions that have given us the tried and tested StoryPedagogy model. Our work has touched nearly 9.1 million over 28 years. About 18,000, pan Indian, other communities, including writers, illustrators, translators, tribal storytellers, other professionals, students, teachers etc. Last year we also worked with Sidis, the African diaspora people who have been living in India for hundreds of years (research and storytelling leading to a book). Vision: Katha builds its vision on the powerful idea that children can create a sustainable world for themselves; one that is free, fair and fearless. Mission: To enhance the joy of reading so as to ensure an India where every child is a reader-leader, creating a sustainable world for herself, our people, our planet. Subsidiary goals are to:
-Stimulate an interest in lifelong learning and applied technology that will help the child grow into a confident, self-reliant, responsible and responsive adult.
-Help break down gender, cultural and social stereotypes.
-Encourage, foster excellence, and applaud quality literature and translations in and between the various Indian languages.
-Forge cross-cultural connections through stories, storytelling and story in education.
